What are Dental Implants?

Our dental implants in Launceston are a durable solution to replace a missing tooth. Dental implants are placed in a series of minor operations. A screw-like metal is placed in the jaw and over time, the bone grows around the implant to hold it in place.

An artificial tooth, or crown, is then attached to the metal to fill in the gap left by the missing tooth. The crown is specially made to look like your other teeth in size, shape & colour.

Dental implants can also be used to hold a dental bridge or dentures in place.

When are dental implants needed?

If you have one or multiple teeth missing, dental implants might be a better option for you. In general, a dental implant might be suitable if you:

– Have a fully grown, healthy jawbone,
– Don’t have gum disease,
– Don’t have conditions that affect bone healing

Dr Govind Jindal’s team at Launceston Dental will discuss with you if dental implants are the best option for you.

What happens during a dental implant procedure?

A dental implant procedure is typically done in stages over a few months, with a series of minor operations & tests. Multiple scans, x-rays, and minor procedures are needed to ensure that the implant is installed effectively and is healing correctly. Some bone grafting might be required as well as they are used to encourage the growth of the bone and soft tissue. Allowing us to provide an optimum foundation for your dental implants to be installed.

There are 6 key steps in a dental implant:

  • Scans & X-rays

Scans and x-rays are performed so that our dentists in Launceston have a clear picture of where the implant is going to be placed.

  • Minor operation

Your Launceston dentist will perform a minor operation, you are usually given anaesthetic so you can’t feel a thing!

  • Waiting period

After the implant is placed in the jaw, there is a waiting period so the bone can grow over the implant.

  • Create foundation

Once the bone has grown over the implant & it is stable, we create a foundation for your new tooth.

  • Moulds created

Once we are satisfied with the progress, a mould of your mouth is created to make the artificial tooth or teeth.

  • Installation

Once the mould is complete, the artificial tooth or teeth are screwed or cemented into the foundation – and you’re done!

What to expect after a dental implant?

What to expect after a dental implant?

After any minor operations, you might have bruising, pain and swelling in your gums and face. You may also experience some bleeding from the gums.

You may need to eat soft food after surgery to let the area heal.

No special care is required for a dental implant. Normal brushing and flossing is required, and of course, the regular check-ups.
